Details

The Court House has recently been renovated, the main feature of these renovations has been the lime washing of the external brickwork to protect the fragile surfaces against the ravages of time. Last restored in 1960 the external surface was taken back to its original brick but the soft nature of the brickwork led to rapid decay.

Originally built by the Windsor based contractor William Cox who completed the job in 15 months for £1,800

The court house was designed by Francis Greenway the ex-convict who was appointed Civil Architect and Assistant Engineer by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1816. The Court House was completed in 1822 however towards the end of the 19th century the building showed signs of damp. The exterior was then cement rendered but in 1960 the render was removed and some 15,000 bricks replaced. This rejuvenation was not successful so the present lime washing was necessary.
